Do you need a Part 107 certificate?

Why drone careers are growing: Part 108, AAM, and the low altitude economy

Ask anyone who spent time in Washington, D.C. this year with the FAA, major operators, or the delivery networks, and one phrase keeps coming up: the low altitude economy. It describes something real — the airspace below 400 feet is being turned into working commercial infrastructure, the way highways and broadband were before it. And infrastructure needs a workforce. Four forces are converging to create the drone careers in this guide:

Part 108: the rule that unlocks scale

FAA Part 108 is the long-awaited rule for routine beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone operations — proposed by the FAA in 2025 and now in the final stages of rulemaking. Today, most commercial flights legally require the pilot to keep the aircraft in sight; Part 108 replaces that one-waiver-at-a-time model with a framework for routine, repeatable long-range operations. That is the difference between a drone program that flies demonstrations and one that runs delivery routes, inspects hundreds of miles of pipeline, or monitors rail corridors — and it is why transportation and logistics companies are hiring ahead of the rule. Advanced Air Mobility: bigger than "drones"

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) — larger electric aircraft carrying cargo and eventually passengers — is moving from prototypes to deployed infrastructure: vertiports, charging networks, maintenance facilities, and operations centers are being built now. The FAA forecasts AAM ramping toward roughly 1.6 million annual departures within six years of entering service. AAM is not what most people picture when they hear "drones," but it draws on the same workforce this guide maps: crew, technicians, operations and safety professionals.

UTM: air traffic control for the low altitude economy

None of this scales safely without UTM — Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (sometimes called Universal Traffic Management), the emerging system that keeps low-altitude operations deconflicted, tracked, and safe. UTM is quietly generating a class of jobs that did not exist five years ago: airspace coordinators, UTM service specialists, and safety analysts who ensure thousands of simultaneous flights don’t become thousands of conflicts.

Four operators are competing to own the last mile — the final leg between a fulfillment center and your door — and each is building a full aviation workforce to do it. Why this matters for career-seekers: when a drone role maps to an established SOC occupation, you can look up its real wages, its growth projection, and the credentials that move you up — and employers can classify and pay the role properly.

Job outlook & market demand

Everything above describes the jobs that exist today. The forecast question is what Part 108, AAM, and UTM do to that picture — and here the federal data is unusually direct. The FAA’s own forecast assumes the BVLOS framework matures, and its numbers already reflect the early shape of the low altitude economy:

The honest framing: drone workforce growth will not show up as one clean “drone jobs” number. Demand appears across aviation, robotics, data, inspection, public safety, mapping, logistics, and maintenance occupations as more industries adopt drones. Here is what the credible federal data shows:

  • 493,396 certificated remote pilots as of December 2025, projected to reach ~628,600 by 2030 — a 28% increase, described by the FAA as more than 135,000 new remote pilot opportunities (FAA Aerospace Forecast FY2026–2046).
  • The commercial UAS fleet stood at ~424,500 registered aircraft in 2025, projected to ~540,800 by 2030 (≈5% annual growth); the FAA's high-scenario estimate approaches 1.5 million (same source).
  • The recreational fleet (~1.55 million aircraft) continues to feed the talent pipeline — many professionals start as hobbyists.
  • Advanced Air Mobility operations are forecast to ramp from initial service to roughly 1.6 million annual departures within six years of entry into service, creating adjacent crew, maintenance, and operations demand (same source).
  • On the occupation side, O*NET flags several drone-mapped occupations as Bright Outlook (projected to grow rapidly or have large numbers of openings): commercial pilots, avionics technicians, surveying and mapping technicians, cartographers and photogrammetrists, GIS technologists, aerospace engineering and operations technologists.

What we deliberately don't do: publish “X million drone jobs by 2030” claims. Sourced fleet and certificate growth plus occupation-level projections are stronger ground than industry-report headlines with undisclosed methodology.

It replaces case-by-case waivers with a standing framework for long-range flights — the unlock that lets drone delivery, pipeline inspection, and corridor monitoring run at scale.
