Flying Toward the Future: How Lake County Schools Are Elevating Student Success with USI

Written by USI | Feb 17, 2026 2:00:04 PM

At Lake County Schools, aviation and STEM education have taken flight—literally. Through a partnership with the Unmanned Safety Institute (USI), students are gaining hands-on experience in drone technology, aeronautical science, and aviation maintenance while earning college credits and nationally recognized certifications.

A Classroom That Mirrors the Real World

Each day, students in Lake County’s aviation science program spend a dedicated class period immersed in STEM-based aviation courses. Classes follow a traditional bell schedule, with approximately 50-minute sessions that blend technical instruction and practical application.

Students often take one period in Aviation Science alongside another in Naval Science, creating a structured yet dynamic learning experience. The program isn’t just about learning how to fly—it’s about mastering the science and systems that make aviation possible. From flight planning and aeronautical theory to hands-on drone piloting and maintenance, students are exposed to every layer of the aviation ecosystem.

Turning Coursework into Career Paths

Success at Lake County Schools isn’t just measured by grades—it’s measured by outcomes.
Students are earning FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certifications, college credit hours, internships, scholarships, and even private pilot licenses.

In fact, the program has already produced standout success stories.

One student, Lukas Hill, earned his FAA Part 107 certification, won a Navy-funded private pilot scholarship, and completed his private pilot training—all before graduation. He has since interned with USI and now freelances as a commercial drone pilot.

Building Professionalism and Confidence

Participation in Lake County’s drone program is voluntary—but expectations are high. Students are held to college-level standards for academics, writing, lab work, and professionalism.

The results speak for themselves: students are not only meeting those standards, but they’re also exceeding them.

Local principals and staff have praised the professionalism of students, especially during their summer drone video project, where students captured aerial footage for campus and district use. The project received enthusiastic feedback and highlighted the program’s value to the broader community.

The Power of Partnership

With USI’s structured curriculum and educator support, Lake County Schools have built a drone and aviation pathway that connects classroom learning to real-world opportunities. The program reflects USI’s mission: to help schools remove barriers and give students a tangible route to future-ready careers in aviation, robotics, and STEM.

“Metrics of success are measured with college credit hours earned, certifications of all varieties, internships, scholarships, and private pilot licensing. Each of these we have accomplished in the previous year.”
